Journal Prompts for the Year of the Horse
writing down our thoughts and keeping things moving
I’ve been thinking a lot about the Year of the Fire Horse, which comes around only once every sixty years. I don’t come from a culture that celebrates it, but somehow it feels perfectly aligned with how I feel about this year and serves as a little nudge to step into the energy I want to lean into this 2026.
The Fire Horse is all about independence, passion, energy, and fast change. The horse itself stands for freedom and speed, and with fire in the mix, things move quickly, often dramatically so (I’m a double Leo, so you can’t blame me for feeling targeted.)
I want to let time pass and make the most of it this year. My twenties have felt like they’re moving at lightning speed, and I’ve spent a lot of time worrying about keeping up. Lately, I’ve started seeing how fast things are moving as an opportunity, rather than something to stress over. I’m just trying to stay in motion and take advantage of each moment, and honestly, it’s already paying off.
The past couple of months have been unusually busy, and in the chaos, journaling has fallen to the wayside. When life moves fast, though, pausing for a few minutes to reflect can make all the difference. I thought it could be fun to journal through this energy, to capture some of it while it’s still fresh, and to let go of anything that’s not serving us.
I’ve spent the week jotting down prompt ideas, and I’ve split them into two levels, so you can pick the pace that works for you and see where it takes you.
If you’re new to journaling and want a place to start, my beginner’s guide has all the tools, prompts, and inspiration you could need, whether you’re into pen-to-paper or digital diaries. It was posted a year ago, but I still love it. I’ll make an updated one soon!
Mini prompts ✒️
These are short and simple, great if you’re just getting back into journaling or want an easy way to start the year. You don’t need to dig too deep, and I know we don’t always have the energy for it. One page is good enough, and it might even spark a little extra reflection along the way.
Where do you feel restless or ready to move fast right now?
What small passion or hobby could you actually give time to this week?
What tiny risk could you take this month that might lead to something exciting?
When do you feel most independent in life?
Choose one word to capture the energy you want for 2026 (just one).
Tip: You can do all five on one page, pick just one if time is tight, or treat it as a five-day mini ritual, one prompt each morning. The year of the horse is about keeping things moving (including yourself).
Want more As of Late? For $30/year or $5/month, you get a bonus newsletter each month, access to the paid archive, and all my love and thanks for the support.
I’ve split the next prompts into three sections (self, action, connection). You can complete everything throughout the year, mix them up, or choose the section you think needs the most work or reflection! It’s supposed to be fun.
SELF
These prompts are about introspection, personal growth, independence, and passions. I’ve been all about taking up space and being playful with myself, so I hope these inspire you to do the same and help you notice what makes you feel more alive.
What’s one thing you’re truly passionate about?
If money didn’t matter, how would you spend your days?
What scares you in a way that also feels exciting?
When do you feel most like your own person?
What part of yourself could you challenge this year?
Where could you embrace change instead of resisting it?
Pick a daily habit, small or big, that could help keep your momentum going.
Who or what inspires courage in you?
ACTION
This year is about taking leaps, moving forward, and testing what’s possible. Change can be scary, but growth only happens if you’re flexible. Looking back, change often points you in better directions, even when it doesn’t feel that way at first.
What’s one thing you’re scared to say yes to, but know deep down you should go for?
Which project or goal is ready for a push?
Where are you waiting too long, and what would happen if you jumped in?
Where have you been too cautious?
What are some ways you could loosen up this year, whatever that looks like?
Make a list of things you can’t control, and imagine moving through them with the fire horse energy (boldly, with a clear head).
What’s a fun “what if” you could actually try?
What’s one thing you can do today that moves you closer to a goal, big or small?
My assignment for you is to play around with your dreams and ideas for the future. Imagine what life could look like if expectations, money, and risk didn’t matter. Make a mood board. Write down your ideal day ten years from now.
It might feel cheesy, but it’s a practice that gives you purpose. Intention and motivation (and let’s be honest, a little delusion) can carry you further than you realize. Most of the time, you’re closer than you think to getting what you want.
CONNECTION
These are all about people, friendships, relationships, and how you show up for them.
Who makes you feel inspired, and how can you soak up a little of their energy?
Where could you set a boundary that makes your life easier?
Who do you want to cheer on or check in with this year?
Which friendships or relationships could use more fun or spark? How can you improve the ones you want to keep?
Who do you admire, and what have they taught you?
Where could you share your energy or ideas with someone else?
Which social habits leave you drained, and what’s one tweak you could make?
Do you identify as an introvert or an extrovert? Why?
Who deserves a thank you from you for keeping you going? (Bonus points if you tell them).
How can you do your own thing while still showing up for the people you care about?
Fire Horse years are rare, and there’s an electric energy in the air this 2026. I don’t always follow my own advice, but I’m trying to make the most of winter — preparing for both work and play. I’m doing things I couldn’t have imagined five years ago, and I rarely stop to notice how far I’ve come, where I can improve, or just be proud of myself (not everything needs constant improvement). I hope you take a minute to do that too, and to make the months ahead feel a little more intentional, playful, and true to you.
Have you got plans for the year? This is a good place to shout them out. I promise that saying them doesn’t make them any less possible. Are you planning trips, applying for a new job, starting a fitness journey, or working on any creative projects? If you’re nervous to comment, you can put it out into the world by voting down here. I’m nosy, and I also want you to go after whatever it is you’re hoping for, so I’m making you say it, one way or another.
